Wintertime Tips: Stormwater Management Practices for
Miami County Residents
|
- Shovel snow
before it turns to ice, limiting the need
for de-icing products like rock salt
- Shovel snow
onto non-paved surfaces like landscaped or
grassy areas. As snow melts, it soaks into
the ground rather than running off directly
into nearby storm drains and streams.
- Sand, sawdust
and even some brands of cat litter can be
used as an environmentally friendly
alternative. Cracked corn can also be used
as a salt alternative and to feed wildlife,
being eaten before it gets washed away with
snow melt.
- After snowmelt,
sweep up residues, including sand, to
prevent it from washing into storm drains
that flow directly to rivers and streams.
